The Composites Research Laboratory (COMRESLAB) at the University of Tehran, faculty of New Sciences & Technologies, was initiated in the spring of 2011 to provide an environment for educational, research & development activities in the field of composite materials and structures.

Outstanding developments have been seen over the past few decades in the field of science and technology of Composite Materials. Their unique and multipurpose characteristics have rendered them as a high priority group of candidate materials for several engineering applications in different sectors of industry spanning railroad, road, air and sea transportation, military, aerospace, municipality, energy production and transmission, civil and infra-structures, oil and petroleum, sports and leisure, etc. Furthermore, the development of new manufacturing methods associated with composites has often resulted in more cost-effective and value-added production lines. In particular, emerging nanocomposites in recent years have encouraged researchers to fully understand and improve their thermo-mechanical/electrical/chemical behavior and thereby expand their applications.

CRL conducts fundamental and applied research in various areas including characterization and processing of advanced composite/nano-composite materials and design, analysis, fabrication and testing of composite structures.

The multidisciplinary research team of CRL consists of graduate students involved in the MSc and PhD programs and research associates sharing common interest in composites science and technology. Research funding in the form of contracts and grants is provided by different sectors of industry and governmental agencies utilizing composites in different engineering applications.

The understanding of composite structures demands for an in-depth knowledge of constituent material behavior encompassing of nano-reinforcing agents, fibers and resins and their interactions at the material level while addressing their structural behavior required fundamental analysis at higher levels.

Concentrating on advanced composites and their applications, the main objective and mission of CRL is to:

  • Conduct basic research on the behavior of composite materials at different scales of nano, micro, meso and macro
  • Modeling and simulation of composite structures to develop the essential understanding of their behavior during the operations
  • Modeling, simulation and experimental characterization of nanocomposites
  • Develop solutions to engineering problems through the use of composite materials and structures
  • Provide a forum for exchanging the novel ideas in the field of composites science and technology among different researchers
